Keeping You Up and Running: The Power of a Great Sales Rep

By: Dr. Fred Pockrass, DDS; co-founder of the Eco-Dentistry Association

It’s every dentist’s nightmare: after-hours on a Friday and your sterilizer goes “kaput!”

For me, this nightmare recently came to fruition. With error messages flashing on the sterilizer, the first thing I thought about was how much production we’d lose unless this got resolved before 8:30 am Monday morning.

Who ya gonna call?

Who did I call in my moment of panic, you ask? No, it wasn’t the Ghostbusters.  But I did the next best thing: I called the cell phone of my outstanding dental sales representative from Patterson Dental, Rob Hayes.  So here’s how my nightmare got transformed into a restful night’s sleep.  Initial relief came when Rob actually picked up his cell phone Friday night.  When he heard our plight, he assured us that he would move heaven and earth to get us a loaner sterilizer by Monday morning.  And so he did. If I Could Change my Family, I Could Change the World

A message from the EDA Co-Founder

At our home on the West Coast, it is de rigueur to compost food scraps, set the table with washable cloth napkins, and walk out the door with a stainless steel coffee mug.  But for my family in South Florida, it’s another story.  My own Mother, God love her, still uses virgin paper napkins, still buys Styrofoam coffee cups, and still chooses bottled water, no matter how many times we’vehad “the conversation”.

No, not the conversation about the birds and the bees: the one where I say these habits are destroying our planet and are bad, bad, bad, and the one where she says, “Oh come on, I throw my trash down the shoot and it’s out of sight, out of mind.”  Because it is my beloved Mother and for the sake of family harmony, I eventually demur, putting the pile of chlorinated white paper napkins on the table, using one myself and ending the meal feeling fraught with guilt.  If I can’t convince my own Mother, I think to myself, maybe humankind is actually doomed. How to Prevent Oral Cancer, Naturally!

When it comes to Oral Cancer, the startling fact of the matter is that this year alone it will wipe out roughly 8,000 Americans, meaning 1 person per hour, 24 hours per day. The numbers are staggering and the importance of early detection and prevention is critical in successful treatment. The good news is that there are preventative measures you can take that are simple and, luckily, quite tasty!

Here are two easy ways to approach Oral Cancer prevention:

1.      Embrace those fruits and veggies!

Pumpkins, butternut squash and sweet potatoes: What do all of these foods have in common? Other than their fall delivery date and frequent appearance in dishes during this time of year, these foods are bursting with Vitamin A, a powerful anti-oxidant helping the body to reduce exposure to free-radicals and prevent cell damage!  This Thanksgiving, take comfort in the fact that your after-dinner slice of pumpkin pie is delivering over 246% of your RDA!

Show your oral health some love!

According to the Journal of the American Dental Association, research shows that eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables plays an important role in preventing Oral Cancer.  So is it possible that the protective measures we’ve been waiting for have been sitting in our refrigerators and on our countertops all along? It’s hard to dispute the growing amount of evidence supporting the effect of fruits and vegetables in preventing Oral Cancer and other dental diseases such as tooth decay and periodontal disease.  Read More…

The Best Seminar… Ever.

The Madow Group’s “The Best Seminar Ever” (TBSE), held last weekend in Las Vegas was part CE, part team-building, part personal growth, and 100% rock show!  Like seeing your favorite band in an intimate venue, it was a “you had to be there” experience.

Madow Brothers...rock on!

The stadium – er, we mean seminar room – had the usual rows of chairs and water stations, but those were the only similarities to “regular” dental seminars.  Stage-fog encircled a shiny drum-set under pink lights on stage. The rest of the room was dark. A buzzing crowd bounced beach-balls to each other in time with loud music, and big-screens on either side of the stage featured live Twitter feed in anticipation of the opening act of “The Best Seminar Ever”: the appearance of rock star dentists Rich and Dave Madow.

What followed was a completely entertaining educational journey.  Read More…

Get Out Your Mental Floss

We all know the importance of flossing: those nasty bacteria that like to hide between our teeth wreak havoc on our gums unless disrupted every day.  But did you know that our patient’s mental health might also benefit from good oral hygiene habits?

A researcher out of the University of Southern California studying dementia risks in twins has discovered a link between the development of Alzheimer’s later in life and good periodontal health earlier in life.  The risk factors are pretty stark: individuals having periodontal disease before age 35 had four times the chances of developing dementia years later. And, researchers also found that older people suffering from poor oral hygiene and gum disease scored lower on memory and cognition tests than their peers with good oral care.  Read More…

The Lifetime Value of Green Dental Clients: Your Marketing Army

After attending a Madow Brothers’ event in San Francisco last quarter, we  left loving their practical approach and easy-to-follow  recommendations because they so closely match what we advise our own EDA Member offices. Apparently great minds do think alike!

One of the most radical concepts the Madow Brothers introduced was eliminating the “comprehensive dentistry” consultation at the heart of many new client appointments.  In these consultations, the patient is presented with a laundry list of everything that’s wrong with their mouth and a monstrous treatment plan promising to transform their smile into one that belongs in a toothpaste commercial.   Read More…

Green Your Halloween

This year, enjoy the festivities without the Halloween nightmares!

The colorful, cooling days of fall bring us a harvest of some of the Earth’s most colorful and health promoting fruits and vegetables.  However, you can bet your best crown that most children during this time of year aren’t thinking about fresh pears and succulent squash—instead, they’re salivating at the thought of the Halloween candy they will be gathering come October 31st.

As we know, Halloween can be a huge pitfall when it comes to oral and whole-body health, as the high sugar content and artificial ingredients of popular candy consumed during this spooky holiday are around every corner. Don’t let unsuspecting teeth fall victim to this Halloween nightmare! Instead, share these healthful and eco-friendly tips with your patients or your own children and help protect those pearly whites AND our planet! Read More…

From the Co-Founder: Eco-Props to AAA

A Cold Day in Hell?

I never thought I’d be giving a shout out to AAA, the organization devoted to driving, for their environmental leadership.  But I’ve got to!

In the most recent issue of their magazine, AAA President Paul Gaffney points out:

  • Everyone of us has to do our part and “small steps count”, like recycling all of our paper waste;
  • Big steps count too, like investing in hybrid or electric cars, and even better, like bicycling whenever possible and increasing use of public transportation;
  • Recycling old motor oil “keeps used oil out of our drinking water, off beaches, and away from wildlife”;
  • AAA’s “Battery Roundup” program provides free battery recycling, keeping millions of pounds of lead and hundreds of thousands of gallons of sulfuric acid out of landfill (www.AAA.com/batteryroundup);
  • Old vehicle tires can find a second life as playground mats, garden mulch and highway paving. Read More…

What exactly IS green dentistry?

 Green dentistry is a vast topic that touches on everything from patient care to dental processes, and the Eco-Dentistry Association  has a very simple definition: It’s the first of the four R’s – the one that comes before Reduce, Re-use, Recycle.

It’s Re-think.

Rethinking is the most important, and the most fun aspect of a going-green lifestyle. Re-think your way of getting to work; re-think how far your food has to travel to reach your table; re-think your beauty-care products. If you can start this simple practice in your daily life, it will spill into your work habits, making green dentistry natural.

The Eco-Dentistry Association defines green dentistry as practice that:

  • Reduces waste and pollution
  • Saves energy, water and money
  • Incorporates high-tech innovations
  • Is wellness based

Here are some compelling reasons and tips for re-thinking hygiene practice:

Reduce waste & pollution:

Re-think infection control and sterilization practices.

The EDA estimates 1.7 billion sterilization pouches and 680 million chair barriers, light handle covers and patient bibs end up in landfill each year from US dental offices alone. Consider these cost-saving, planet-saving options for reducing waste and pollution:
  • Switch to re-usable cloth infection control and sterilization products.
  • Choose and eco-friendly disinfectant and line cleaner.
  • Use bulk-prophy paste to reduce the waste from single-serving packaging
Save energy, water and money

Re-think your daily habits.

Dental offices use a lot of electricity to run compressors, drills, overhead lights, operatory lights and computers. Dental vacuum systems can use as much as 360 gallons of water per day in a typical practice. Simple changes in habits can make a big difference for the planet and the practice bottom line.
  • Make sure  electronic equipment is turned off every night to reduce “phantom load” which is estimated to account for 10% of the typical energy bill.
  • Share the “Save 90 ADay!” Campaign with your patients, encouraging them to turn off the water while they brush their teeth, saving as much as 90 glasses of water per day.
  • Reduce the use of disposables and switch to re-usables and you’ll lower your practice overhead and attract green dentistry patients who prioritize their health.

Incorporates high-tech

Re-think your tools.

There is a 1:1 correlation between high-tech dentistry and eco-friendly dentistry.

  • Learn to use diode lasers for periodontal therapy.
  • Use digital imaging. If your practice hasn’t made the switch, become familiar with how to operate the various digital imaging systems on the market so you’re green-office ready.

Is wellness-based

Re-think your role.

Your value to your patient lies in your technical skill, but also in your role as a health educator, co-therapist and coach.

  • Incorporate aromatherapy. Look for hand sanitizer, lotions and soaps that incorporate essential oils that are calming for patients, helping them relax and prepare for a healing experience in your chair.
  • Share research and information about the relationship of periodontal disease to diabetes, heart disease and other chronic illnesses with your patients.
  • Read labels. Check out the ingredients of the dental products you’re recommending, and make sure they don’t include sodium lauryl sulphate, alcohol or titanium dioxide (often found in whitening toothpastes, this ingredient is also found in wall paint!)
