Targeting Patients Through Your Unique Practice Brand

How Green Office Design Can Help Attract Your Ideal Patient

starbucks_pledge_greenWhen small business owners consider the term “brand” it often brings to mind large multinational corporations such as IBM, Coca-Cola and Apple and the logos that are burned into our collective consciousness.  How, you may ask, does this apply to me, the owner of a single 6 chair general dental practice in Northern California or a 3,500 square foot orthodontic office in suburban Toronto?  In fact the strength of your brand is as important to your small practice as it is to the largest blue chip corporation.  It is no secret that the competition that exists in today’s dental industry is fierce.  Every opportunity to set yourself apart from the masses must be considered.  As an architect whose focus is designing dental and orthodontic offices, I would like to touch on how incorporating strongly held principles, such as green design, into your practice can help better define your brand and attract like-minded individuals with similar values to your patient base.

One 2013 Resolution Everyone Can Make

336Maybe you’ve already created a mile long list of things you would like to accomplish in 2013.  Stay organized, get to the gym, sleep more and drink more water.  Or, maybe you just have one or two that will help you lead a happier, healthier life in this next year and beyond. No matter your individual goals, there’s one idea we can all get behind: Make 2013 your year to go green.

That’s it. Just one simple idea with so many meanings that everyone can benefit from now and into the future.

Never in human history have we been faced with the crises we are today. Food and water shortages affect millions of people around the globe. Rising temperatures and ocean levels leave devastation in their wake. We’re moving at warp speed in a direction for which there may be no return, and it’s time to hit the brakes.

Slow Down and Make it the Season of Sharing

keep_calm_and_carry_on_ornament-6851Life is crazy…busy. How many times have you asked a colleague or friend how they’re doing and they respond with something along the lines of, “Great, I’ve been crazy busy,” or “Good, just so busy!” And if this is the normal response for the rest of the year, consider how thinly stretched we all become during the hectic holiday season. There are presents to buy, stockings to stuff, parties to attend, meals to prepare, cards to write…. AH! It’s easy to forget what the holiday season is really about: Sharing and connecting with our loved ones, communities, and appreciating our own short, miraculous lives on this incredible planet in the middle of an expansive and unknown universe.

The hysteria we experience is not a necessary or inevitable condition of life; it’s something we fall into and often become unaware of, unintentionally feeding a cycle of disconnection with ourselves and life around us. But guess what? You’re not stuck in this cycle. You can intentionally choose to slow down, take a deep breath and restructure your awareness. The holiday season, by its very nature, is the perfect time to embody the spirit of sharing, love, kindness and balance.

Give the Gift of a Beautiful, Healthy Smile

toothbrush14This time of year we find ourselves surrounded by family and friends as we gather to celebrate the holidays. We warm our hearts and bellies with the season’s many pleasures, and on such joyous occasions there are plenty of reasons to smile from ear to ear. And, with so many smiles being shared, the holiday season serves as an excellent opportunity to help your friends and family keep their pearly whites in top shape by giving the best gift of all: a healthy, beautiful smile.

Of course, here at the EDA we’re big believers that the best gifts are shared experiences, which never end up in a landfill and encourage us to enjoy our communities and the great outdoors. But when you do choose to buy, why not make it count?

Dental Fear: This Time it’s Personal

EDA Co-Founder, Ina Pockrass, shines some light on her own experience with dental anxiety

Heart racing, palms sweating, hands shaking, I sat in his dental chair for the first time.  We had been dating only a few weeks, and I was petrified to tell the man who would become my husband that my greatest fear was going to the dentist.

He sat down, opened a tray of instruments and put on his gloves.  I felt my cheeks flush with fear. He set the chair back, ready to take his first official look in my mouth.  That’s when the tears started.

He immediately lifted the chair back up. “What’s up?” he sweetly asked.  Then I spilled the beans.  “I was afraid to tell you”, I started.  Then I shared my tale of dental trauma: how, at age 8, after spending a night awake in excruciating pain, I was brought to a dentist who strapped me down to a chair, told me to be quiet, and performed a root canal on me with insufficient numbing.  The pain had been so intense, I remembered, that I thought I was going to pass out.

Beyond Candy: Other Stuff that’s Bad for Your Teeth

As the holiday season revs up, we know you want to indulge in your favorite treat, be it Aunt Mary’s pumpkin pie, or Uncle Irving’s special Irish coffee.  So we thought you’d appreciate an easy guide to foods and beverages that can wreak havoc on the protective coating of your teeth that helps fight tooth decay, or which can otherwise send you to the dental chair in the middle of your holiday cheer.  So here are our top 5 things to limit or avoid, no matter the season:

1. White Flour Crackers.  We all love our crunchy-munchies, but the versions made from bleached white flour turn almost immediately into bacteria producing factories which can degrade tooth enamel.  Choose whole-grain versions for better oral and overall health.

2. Popcorn.  Take me out to the movies!  We love a big bag of the hot stuff too, drizzled with butter we confess (organic of course!), but biting down on a popcorn kernel is one of the most common causes of broken teeth and fillings, and popcorn husks can get stuck between teeth, irritating gums. Trust us, these problems almost always happen on a weekend.  So indulge, but carefully.

Get White and Stay Green!

If you’re like most of us, you want the lightest, brightest smile possible. While red wine, coffee and ketchup may have dulled your smile, you may be concerned about the ingredients in teeth whitening products, or whether whitening harms our already overburdened planet.

We hear you. Some whitening products, particularly those intended for home use, contain chemicals best kept out of our mouths and our environment. These include sodium saccharin, which is derived from chlorine and ammonia, or titanium dioxide, a chemical that is used to make paint white, or BPAs (Bisphenol As), a chemical used in many plastics and which has recently been banned in the US for use in baby bottles and canned food liners (this chemical has long been banned in Europe). You should always read the labels on whitening products for home use, and research ingredients that may be of concern.

That’s why we got excited when we learned about a new whitening system available in the US that can get your teeth their natural whitest,  in just 20 minutes in the dental chair, and which won’t harm you or the planet. It’s made by a California company called Sinsational Smile and it’s also the first whitening product to earn the coveted Eco-Dentistry Association “Accepted Seal.”

Make It a Green Halloween!

October is finally here and as the trees transform their summer leaves into beautiful autumn hues of orange, red, yellow and gold, we not only begin to prepare for the winter months but also the coming of the holiday season. First up? Halloween!

For many, Halloween is synonymous with spooky décor, creative costumes, and yes…sweet treats! Lots of them. And while we love each  of these things, we don’t love the tremendous amount of waste or impending sugar overload that can accompany them. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the spirit of Halloween without compromising our health or the health of our planet.

Here are our top tips for a ghoulishly green, EEK-O friendly Halloween!

1. Participate in a costume swap: According to one study shared in Real Simple magazine, over 6,250 tons of landfill waste could  be avoided (that’s equivalent to the weight of 2,500 mid-sized cars)  if kids swapped their Halloween costumes instead of purchasing new ones. This startling statistic doesn’t even take into consideration adults dressing up for their own neighborhood or office parties. Avoid the unnecessary waste and check out Green Halloween’s National Costume Swap program and learn how to organize your own costume-swap party or find one happening near you.
